OMEGA is grateful and excited to be the recipient of the Illinois Department of Transportation Consultant Exceptional Service Award for construction engineering of the Jane Byrne Circle Interchange Flyover Bridge in Chicago, IL. This award was nominated by IDOT and was presented at the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Illinois Spring Meeting and Awards Luncheon on June 9th in Peoria, IL.
The new six unit 1,978 foot long structure of the Jane Byrne Interchange includes a curved section of the bridge on a 540 foot radius that required girders to be erected directly over the Kennedy, Dan Ryan, and Eisenhower Expressways. The bridge is supported by 31 piles and 33 drilled shafts cored into bedrock and required fabrication and erection of 4.8 million pounds of structural steel with girders ranging up to 90″ deep and 189 feet in length.
OMEGA was proud to serve as the lead engineering firm and mentor upcoming African American firm, The Roderick Group on this project. Other minority firm team members included GSG Consultants, R G Engineering, Atlas Engineering, Interra, and Dynasty Group. This challenging interchange project resulted in travel and safety improvements in one of the most congested interchanges in the world with over 400,000 daily motorists.
