Diverging Diamond Interchange
Illinois Route 59 from Ferry Road to Aurora Avenue
OMEGA provided construction engineering services on this $100 million project which included advance and mainline work, as well as, interchange reconstruction, add lanes, pump station removal and replacement, noise walls, tree removal, and landscaping.
The project included utility relocations, roadway reconstruction, widening, and resurfacing of Illinois Route 59 and side streets, traffic signals, lighting, drainage structures, sidewalks/shared use path, ADA ramps, retaining walls, and noise abatement walls. The new roadway has three lanes in each direction and construction extended for three and a half miles.
In addition, there was a complete reconfiguration of the existing typical diamond interchange at I-88 into a Diverging Diamond Interchange, the first such interchange in northeastern Illinois. The new configuration enhances safety as motorists do not have to make a left-hand turn against traffic to access the Tollway going in either direction.
As a part of the interchange reconfiguration the Illinois Route 59 bridge over the Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) was removed and replaced with two new independent bridge structures.
