I-90 at IL 47 Interchange

Jane Addams Memorial Tollway from Mile Post 45.7 to Mile Post 47.4

CLIENT: Illinois Tollway

OMEGA provided construction engineering services for this $37 million, complete interchange, reconstruction project, the first project to get underway as part of the Illinois Tollway’s $12 billion capital program, Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future. This complex project involved removal of the existing outdated bridge structure and partial access interchange while constructing a new seven lane wide bridge over I-90 with new all electronic I-PASS toll plazas servicing six new ramps, allowing full access in all directions. This project was constructed on an aggressive schedule to avoid any impact to the ongoing 62 mile long Jane Addams Tollway mainline reconstruction.

The work also included reconstruction of 1.7 miles of the existing IL 47 as an all new concrete, six lane, divided highway, with roadway drainage improvements, extension of existing box culverts for Eakin Creek, new traffic signals at the ramps and at Dahmer / Freeman Road, as well as a complete roadway lighting system, both on the Tollway ramps and along IL 47, to enhance roadway safety.

As the Illinois Tollway’s first “green interchange,” the project also included several new environmentally friendly initiatives including geothermal heating and cooling for the plaza buildings, reflective roofs, trellised vegetation at the buildings, bioswales and permeable ramp shoulder pavement.
