This complex project involved removal of the existing outdated bridge structure and partial access interchange , constructing a new seven lane wide bridge over I-90, and constructing new all electronic I-PASS toll plazas servicing six new ramps, allowing full access in all directions.
As the Illinois Tollway’s first “green interchange,” the project also included several new environmentally friendly initiatives including:
- Geothermal heating and cooling for the plaza buildings
- Reflective roofs
- Trellised vegetation at the buildings
- Permeable ramp shoulder pavement
